If you are thinking about going back to school for a higher degree in education, no matter your age or prior education, I would highly recommend that you stay away from for-profit colleges.
I made the mistake of enrolling in two of them, and I wish I had never started. First, I went to the University of Phoenix for an MBA which took 86 weeks to complete, and it wasn’t long before I found that the degree was basically worthless.
But that didn’t matter, my masochistic nature led me off to earn a doctorate from Argosy University, which I did not finish because they lied to me about switching programs. I started off in Organizational Management, which I saw as totally worthless. It doled out the same coursework that I had gone through at the University of Phoenix. The only difference was you had to produce about five times the amount of work, which I found to be a waste of time and money.
I asked them time and time again to transfer me to the psychology department, which they promised to do but never delivered, so I sent in my resignation. Overall, I took less than six months of course work in Organizational Management at Argosy before I dropped out of the program. Now the bill, with interest, has accrued to over $25,000.
The funny thing is Argosy no longer exists. In January of 2019, they entered into federal receivership and permanently closed their doors. Federal funding was cut off, and according to the Education Department, 9,000 students who enrolled at Argosy were told to try and transfer their credits elsewhere or apply for loan cancellation if their credits were not accepted by other Universities. Most universities will not accept Argosy credits, so you're caught with a large debt with no educational benefits.
The meaning of for-profit colleges means FOR PROFIT, clear and simple. They are owned and usually run by private companies loaded up with investors and shareholders who are hungry for profit and could care less whether you get an education or not. These schools are usually diploma mills. And those diplomas are often worthless. You may not be able to transfer to a real college or advance your career or find new employment.
The upshot is away from profit schools. You are better off attending a community college for either complete matriculation, or perhaps a certificate program, then move on to a real college where you’ll get the proper diploma and education.
I can help you if you fell into this rut. There are several federal sites you can go as well to that can explain and help with your situation.
