BEWARE OF SCAMMERS

Writer: Rob BasichisRob Basichis

Scammers are watching you. They are watching everything you do on the Internet Be it your phone or your computer, they are trolling searches to build a personal file on you. Whether you are looking to buy now, or sometime in the future, they’re watching. If you’re thinking about retiring and moving to Florida in a couple of years, they’re watching. Looking for a car, they’re watching. Every time you search, they are gaining more information to build a profile on you. When you just click, they have tools that detect that too. Why does matter? “They are trying to determine what you are looking for and what you are willing to pay. These metrics factor into how they are going to come after you. A sophisticated scammer can easily whip up a phony website that looks altogether professional. It has all the things you have been looking for at prices you can’t believe. Because the site looks legitimate, you go ahead and make a purchase. Then you wait for it to arrive, but it never comes. You text them for an update, but no one answers back. You try and find a phone contact number, but none exists. You keep watching for the mailman, waiting hopefully for the product to arrive, but it never does. Now the time comes where you have to try and convince your financial institution that this was a scam. Sometimes they will reverse the charge and sometimes they won’t. Either way, you are out of money and have to fight to get it back. Always check if a website is legitimate. Look at reviews on the company. Take a look at what the Better Business Bureau has to say about them. Check to see if anyone has posted something on Rip Off Report. Go to Yelp and look. Do your homework before purchasing from an unknown site, especially one that is offering prices that may look a little bit good to be true. When purchasing from anyone online, make sure you use a debit card or a credit card. This gives you some form of protection. Never send cash or money orders to any site under any circumstances, because if it’s a scam you will never recover it.

There is a software called System Mechanic that once installed, deletes your search history and search data. It may be worth looking into. I know they have a demo and a free trial.
